Retreats
at Manzanita Village offer an opportunity for simple, back-country
living. We have a wood-fired sauna for use on winter retreats, fresh
air and clean water from our own well, walking and hiking far from human
presence, mostly organic vegetarian food. Prices include food and lodging.
Meditation
retreats are silent, blending traditional aspects of Vipassana practice,
a relaxed Zen form, and some appropriate interactive processes. Teachers
give meditation instruction, Dharma talks, and on longer retreats are
available for private interviews.

TRANSFORMING OURSELVES,
TRANSFORMING THE WORLD
THE PRINCIPLES AND
PRACTICES FOR A SOCIALLY ENGAGED BUDDHISM
Retreat with Donald Rothberg
and Diana Winston
Printable
flier, with full details (pdf format)
October
24-26 (pdf file)
How might the Buddha act in
these difficult times, guided by wisdom and compassion? How can we develop
a spiritual practice that resonates in all the interconnected parts
of our lives? What unique gifts can we each offer to alleviate suffering
and promote transformation in the world?
In this retreat, we will explore these questions by focusing on a number
of key guiding principles for socially engaged Buddhism that can inform
our day-to-day lives and our sense of engaged practice. Through periods
of silent practice, talks, individual and group reflection and inquiry,
and interactive exercises, this retreat will explore aspects of socially
engaged Buddhism.

To
be playful is not to be trivial or frivolous, or to act as though nothing
of consequence will happen. On the contrary, when we are playful with
each other we relate as free persons, and the relationship is open to
surprise; everything that happens is of consequence. It is, in fact
seriousness that closes itself to consequence, for seriousness is a
dread of the unpredictable outcome of open possibility. To be serious
is to press for a specified conclusion. To be playful is to allow for
possibility whatever the cost to oneself. James Carse.
